Speaking Mandarin or Khmer fluently was never a priority for me as I care more about delving deep into the exploration of our ancestral roots, tracing the intricate tapestry of our history, and unraveling the multifaceted web of cultural influences that have molded our heritage and language.
Therefore, what better way could there be than to embark on the enlightening journey of learning a different language, thereby unlocking the doors of boundless resources that are exclusively available in said language?
Currently, at a beginner level, HSK 3 and my level of Khmer is unknown since there isn’t a standard in place to determine levels.
Now, if you are an avid reader like me, it’s worth considering taking full advantage of the numerous benefits that come with reading. One practical way to do this is by making use of free trials or taking advantage of limited monthly readings that are often offered by various reputable research and academic websites. By doing so, you can enjoy access to a plethora of valuable resources and expand your knowledge in areas of interest.

OMG!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SITE!!! My favorite. IT EXPLAINS DEFINITIONS FURTHER, HAS AUDIO RECORDINGS, AND EVEN DIALOGUES + PARAGRAPH EXAMPLES TO LISTEN TO AND READ!!!
This is my 2nd favorite, it has English definitions and whenever I recall a random word, I always look it up to make sure I’m remembering it correctly. There’s also other classifications on there too. Audio recordings don’t work fyi.
A good resource for beginners
It is an overview about the Khmer language and has some information on consonant clusters and so forth.
A good read if you want to learn and read about Khmer phonology, syntax, nouns, and so on.
There is a lot of linguistic jargon. I don’t recommend this for beginners that are just starting to learn the Khmer script but for those who already have a solid foundation. I do love how detailed and concise it is!! Just google the name, it’s copyright free and I believe it’s publicly available too!

If you find yourself similar to me, not having many interactions with the Cambodian or Khmer community, I highly suggest incorporating the practice of watching instructional videos in Khmer that teach English or your desired language. This simple technique has brought about a profound transformation in the way I perceive things and has played a crucial role in enhancing my ability to recall and retain words and phrases.
For example, I began learning Mandarin using an app called Duolingo and supplemented my studies with Cdramas, comics (Manhuas), Yabla, and other apps for about a year or so. Eventually, I decided to take Chinese classes in college, and I must say that my self-study efforts proved beneficial in those classes. Although I no longer take those classes, I continue to utilize Duolingo and other free resources like TikTok to enhance my comprehension of colloquial and spoken language skills in Mandarin. Moreover, I have developed an effective self-study method for myself that involves writing down words and phrases in English, Khmer, and my respective target language(s). This comprehensive approach has proven to be an invaluable asset throughout my language learning journey, providing me with a solid foundation and enabling steady progress.
